I went to the NCSTA state conference on November 19 and 20th. It was really interesting. They had booths for vendors where they gave free products to the teachers. They gave books, software, DVD, lab kits, and just some fun information out.
There were seminars all day. I went to one on how to teach science to kids with ADD. That could have been better. I was hoping to hear about techniques that helped students with LD's to gain understanding better. The example we talked about in class was the bouncy ball was a good example. It was more or less a free plug for this school in Charlotte for kids with LD's.
There was another about how to implement inquiry in the classroom. That was good. I learned a lot about instructional strategies I didn't know. Apparently I have only been taught one instructional strategy, and that's not a good thing. So learning what I didn't know was eye opening. I thought about my kids. They will really only ever know what I tell them. Yes, there is independent study, but how many high school kids do that? So really what I tell them may be their only exposure to biology. I want to leave a good legacy.
