In my elementary school, there was one male teacher (a kindergarten teacher). He was also the only black teacher (or any other race, except for the Spanish teachers) in the entire school. HE WAS WONDERFUL! Kids fought like crazy to get into his class. All the parents wanted their kids to have him. I was so upset because I didn't have him as my teacher! Once, I even skipped a field trip with my class so that I could stay with him in his classroom. I think it's probably the best profession a man can enter into! For a man who loves children, there is nothing better! Children at that age need a strong male role model (especially if they don't have one at home)! I still see Mr. Byers when I go home, and I always hug him!

I agree there needs to be more encouragment for males to enter into the profession of teaching. I only remember having two male teachers in my elementary school experience and I really looked up to them!

i think it is wonderful that it is becoming a more widely acceptable profession for men to enter. children really do need to see men and have that role model and feel like men are there for them, not just their women teachers. dating a future teacher is wonderful-- we talk about our future classrooms and different philosophies and ideals, it's neat to get a man's opinion about education and he brings a lot of things to my attention that i had not even thought about... more men in the classrooms mean that we will all begin to get this broader prospective and i think that is going to make the profession even richer.

When I was in school I have to agree that there wasn't hardly any male teachers present. But, these teachers were the most interesting to me being a female and having mainly female teachers. They are the ones who gave a different perspective on life. I know that there aren't many males going into the teaching profession, but there needs to be. Students like to have mxed genders teaching a variey of classes. Plus, male teachers are in demand. I am not saying that all teachers aren't, but if you are a male teacehr you will be snatched up be any school system in a heart beat. Believe me!

Oh yes I totally agree that there need to be more male teachers out there. Especially for those male students who always seem to get into trouble because they think they can push their female teachers around and get away with it. I remember the one male middle school teacher I had was the one who kept all the hormone driven trouble makers in line. If it wasn't for him I dont know what would of happened there.

I will have to say, that some of my favorite teachers growing up in school were the male teachers. For some reason, I was fascinated by the atmosphere that they brought to the classroom. Even in teaching, they give a very different perspective than other teachers. I know that isn't true for all male teachers, but I really had fun in those classes when I was growing up! :)

Male teachers add another dimension to the educational environment. Like we talked about in class, it might be the only chance a student has to view a male role model. The big thing is that we need all teachers, male and female. We need people that want to make a difference. If they happen to be male, all the better, the students recieve a different slant on life.

I agree with everyone in that male teachers are greatly needed. I never had a male teacher until high school and even then I only had about 5. They were great! My two favorite teachers are men and I think they are the reason I chose to become a teacher. They made everything so fun and I really wanted to learn. It could just be that I remember them so well because it wasn't the norm for me though! I just wish more men wanted to go into elementary ed. That is where children are developing and those without any male influence at home could greatly benefit.

i agree that male teachers, being rare in the school system that i was in, gave the whole experience in their classroom a different feeling than it was in the other female teacher's classrooms. I enjoyed the classes, but i can't say that one stands out more in my mind than others (other than the ones that every high school girl had a crush on...haha) but i do feel that having a male teacher does make a difference. I'm not sure what this difference is, but it is a difference. the fact that there are more males going into the field of teaching does make a difference for how male teachers are viewed by other teachers, parents and students. I have a great respect for those men who become teachers. my oldest brother always wanted to be a teacher, and he would have been a great teacher, but my mom discouraged him from doing so because of the amount of money that he would be payed in that profession. This is a good point to bring up....men usually go for the higher paying jobs; therefore, teaching isn't their first choice. This may be one good reason why more males aren't teachers. I don't think that my brother regrets not being a teacher because he is very happy in what he is doing, but i would like to see what would have happened if he had gone into that profession.
