As I read the Dewey articles, in addition to the forum topics, and reflected back to my undergraduate Foundations of Public Education course, I am left with the question of what is our purpose now in education? The Dewey articles led the way for making instruction relevant to the person as a whole. The forum and class discussions are all about the varied views of educators and non-educators. The themes of my undergraduate Foundations class deal with the purposes intended for education during the Industrial Revolution. I do not believe that society as a whole has come to a true consensus of what it wants education to do, hence the turmoil of the educators and the non-educators. Have we become so liberal as a society that we can not focus on what needs to taught, or are we so specialized that we can not see beyond our area of expertise?
