The video we watched in class last night showed how clothes can divide students in schools into a social class. I remember as a child in school kids being so mean to other kids simply because on their clothing. I feel that school uniforms would help these problems. I've been in schools in Charlotte that require uniforms and was told that it saved the parents money, helped with discipline, and reduced the sterotypes and negative opinions students have of each other based on their clothing. If parents could not afford the uniform, a church or the PTO would buy it. I suppose there must be some negative aspects since not many public schools in NC use uniforms. What do you think about school uniforms?

As a kid I remember being split on this: No uniform, and assert my identity, or uniform, and maybe feel more accepted. I think it could work, but you have to start young, and evbentually people will find out who is dfferent in other ways (say visit or drive by you at your house, etc. ). I would be willing to give it a shot.

I wore a uniform for seven years - from the second through the eighth grade in my Catholic school. Looking back, I realize that it did save my parents money - I usually only owned play clothes, my uniforms, and white blouses that went with the uniform. Then I would have maybe one or two dresses I could wear to church on Sunday. I usually owned only 2 or 3 pair of shoes - sneakers, "school" shoes, and dress shoes.

It was funny, I was very sick of uniforms after those seven years, but after a few years of high school, and the burden of trying to "dress", I occasionally found myself wishing for the simplicity of my grade school uniform!

I do agree that uniforms are a good idea for certain schools, especially schools that are inner city, or have a huge stratification of economic status. I think uniforms can help foster the unity of a school, and pride in a school.

I have a little "pipe dream" to some day start my own little private school. If I did this, I would have uniforms for my school - to foster pride, identity, group cohesion, and to be able to tell my students that their conduct in public reflects on their school.

A typical suburban school would probably never accept the idea of uniforms. I have also heard of private schools that had so many expensive components to their uniforms that it created a large expense - blouse, skirt, slacks, blazer, special tights, warm up suit, shorts, etc.
