Does anyone agree with the author of "Nickel and Dimed" when she said, "My guess is that the indignities imposed on so many low-wage workers - the drug tests, the constant surveillance, being "reamed out" by managers - are part of what keeps wages low?" "If you're made to feel unworthy enough, you may come to think that what you're paid is what you are actually worth."

I think the indignities imposed on the workers are only partly to blame for the low wages. I know plenty of medium and high-wage workers who have drug tests, so I don't agree with that statement. However, I do agree that many low wage workers are simply too tired from their long hours and sometimes multiple jobs to protest the low wages and demand more money. It is true that if you are treated bad enough, you begin to believe it.

I don't think the unfair treatment causes the low wages, but I think that management does use these tactics to keep the worker feeling like a "peon". Managers at all levels are so distrusting of their workers, that they cause unnecessary job stress and low job satisfaction! Yes, there are some workers who require "policing", but many more could be given free "benefits" if their supervisors and companies showed more genuine appreciation.

I don't really know John, but I wonder if the fate of the low-wage earner has more to do with the American consumer's all-consuming desire to pay the lowest price regardless of the implications?
