A question I found myself pondering while reading Poisonwood is was Mr. Price making a morally correct decision in keeping his family in the Congo when all signs were telling them to leave?
In my opinion he was making his family suffer for issues he himself needed to deal with. I haven't completely finished the book so maybe I'm missing something. I am just wondering what your thoughts are.

I think he should have been better prepared by some of his peers prior to going on this journey of hardship with his family. By better prepared, I mean provided with more background from the other missionaries and their experiences, more about the political unrest, and just generally not so naive in terms of how these people percieved his presence and cause.

I don't think Mr. Price is morally correct to keep his family there. I have not seen many signs that he has much love for his family and have wondered if perhaps he felt a wife and children were expected of a preacher, so therefore he got married and had children. I think Mr. Price won't leave because he has unresolved issues from his past that have caused him to prefer to die doing God's work than take care of his family. I have not completed the book either, but so far these are my thoughts.

I was quite enraged in Price's choice to keep his family there. If he were doing more to help the people, say the Lumumba supporters than I would have appreciated his struggle more. But to stay there, endanger his family for his own selfish cause was idiotic! He certainly violates the family first, love gods children ideals.

I think Mr. Price should think of his family first and evaluate his priorities keeping in mind that he must be willing to compromise. I also think a potential missonary should go through a training program with a psychological test as a requirement. Compassion should also be a requirement.

I agree with the rest of you, Mr. Price needed to take his family out of Africa. I just don't think he had it in him. His zealot's faith blinded him to many of the opportunities that presented themselves in the story. Faith always walks a fine line between blind devotion and "personal" providence. That may not make much sense, but it is a "truth" (little t) that I have come across in my walk as a person of faith. While relying on God is necessary and vital, too much and you end up crediting the Almighty with the good and the bad - and that's not really the case. Stray the other way, and you see yourself in control of everything and God is someone who is barely in the picture - if at all. Mr. Price definitely is on the blinder side of the street and because his faith is so rigid and static he is unable to open up to any possibilities for growth - because he doesn't see the need to grow.

Michael thank you for your post. I find it to be a very accurate. Faith is necessary but it can also be blinding. We also have to look at the tangible things around us and use our common sense as well.
