I daydream of my idea of a "perfect" school, which would be a small private or charter school, with me as the creator/administrator (ha, ha.) It would actually be part traditional, and part Sudbury-esque. It would be lavishly funded, to have plenty of wonderful teachers. (Like I said, this is a dream.)

Once students learned to read, they could proceed through a self-paced core curriculum, with teachers always available to help. Each day, they would be assigned work in these core areas - the basic subjects of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. If they finish their work with time to spare, they can use the remainder of the school day to pursue their other interests - even if they finish their work by 10 a.m. Relaxation, recreation, and socialization would be allowed for a certain portion of that free time. This would help to motivate the students, too. Trained staff would be available to help with any special interests or projects, and wonderful resource material would be available, along with plenty of computers. Extra classes such as music, art, dance, karate, photography, etc. would be available.

As I said, this is a pipe dream, but to me, such a school would allow the best of both worlds. It would solve the problem of half of the students being bored, while the other half is lost. It would have many of the advantages of home schooling without the disadvantages - limited peer interaction, etc. It would have many of the advantages of the Sudbury School, while ensuring that the students receive a core education. Those slower students requiring more time and extra help could receive it, without boring the bright and motivated, who could finish quickly and get on to the more exciting things that they are passionate about.

Do you think I could interest Bill Gates in giving me a grant of several million dollars to fund my school?

Joyce,
I think you have the perfect plan. A school as you have described would give a student a well balanced education.

Joyce, I think you are on to something! This would be my dream as well. You know I think it is possible if we could keep the legislatures from creating school curriculum!

Having a vision is a wonderful thing!! If the vision of Sudbury can be a reality, so can Joyce's. I am a believer that Joyce's idea can be reality someday. It just takes the visionary to be the leader.
