The exercise we did in class the other night really got me thinking about what I believe about the foundations of public education and the future reform. As we know, the purpose of public education was to produce productive workers during the industrial revolution. However, our society has really went through an attitude change, or so I think. As my anti-Sudbury school group pointed out, it is important to train our youth to fit in with the expectations of society and the workforce. However, with the growth of individualism, is our society asking for a change in how things our done? In dealing with many parents I find that they do not see what the big deal is in being late, or having rules, dress codes, etc. My question is, do we as educators need to change our focus and start the reform of society to a more less structure, freedom oriented system? I am not sure I am comfortable with that, but often times feel that my strict structure routine is becoming the minority.
