I think Br. Fowles should have been left in his position as missionary. Br. Fowles was patient with the native people and he was well liked by them. He had a great deal more experience with changing conditions and the jungle environment he lived in than Mr. Price.
Could someone give me their thoughts about this?

From the description in the book I too thought Fowles seemed to be well adjusted to the area. I also think he should have stayed in the missionary position. I wonder if his removal was because he was blending in with the natives too much?

I think it states explicitly in the book that he was removed because he blended too much

I doubt that the Mission Board could have possibly understood what was needed to interface effectively with these people. I imagine that they thought that Fowles had "sold out", rather than he had bent enough to be respected by the Congolese, so that they could now consider what he had to say about his faith, his God, and his Jesus.
It wasn't until the late 60's, and 70's that the concept of "ethnocentrism is bad" worked its way into educated dialogue. Before that, white people assumed that their way was somehow more civilized and superior! Of course, many people still believe this, or we wouldn't have some of these extremist groups - skinheads, etc. Many people are still extremely prejudiced in this country - they just keep their mouths shut a little bit more!
Does anyone think that our earth civilization will someday arrive at that wonderful global culture, and acceptance of diversity that is evidenced on the Star Trek shows? I consider Gene Roddenberry's vision to be the best that humankind alone can hope for. (However, I do not share the political persuasion of Roddenberry - I feel that with God's help, mankind can achieve much more than if we continue to "spit in His face".)
Any thoughts?

No matter how much we change as a society, I think there will always be individualistic personalities that will have ill or postive impact on the whole. Looking at Brother Fowles and Nathan Price, two totally different personalites that regardless of the era, would still have the same impact on the missionary jobs they did.
