There was one other important topic I thought I would start a thread on regarding this reading. One of the many things we take for granted is the inherit right and belief that all people should have access to education. In the Congo, you will recall that none of the women went to school and the boys weren't allowed to go past the age of 11/12 ish.

In fact, in some of politically torn third world countries, I have heard stories where soldiers deliberately smash glasses so children with visual impairments would no longer be able to read. So besides starving for food, many people suffer also from starvation of knowledge and/or risk educating themselves with life threatening consequences.

This is very true, but it is important to understand that the culture in which we live in decides how much value is placed on education. There apparently the knowledge acquired by those is that of daily life and survival. Remember, in their world the Prices had much to learn from them.

While it is sad in our perspective that they were not allowed to be educated, it was not as much of a neccesity as it is here. COmputers and understanding them are a perfect example. We need to know them in order to survive. WHere as their, you need to know how to hunt, be crafty and even suffer to survive. Its all education to me. I fnd that if we are aware, and try to, we can learn from just about anything.
Many of them would love an education, much like ANatole. It always kind of disheartening to see that our own people who are guarnteed a free education do not take advantage of it. Heck, even I began to really appreciate ;learning when it cost me money.
