I have a friend who was in the Peace Corps in Zaire and Sierra Leona in the early 90's. She was evacuated shortly before Mobutu was overthrown. She says that the power of Africa is an ever present force in her life. She feels obligated, as a mother, to take her children to Africa (she's looking at Kenya for a year) because, as she says, they can never understand unless they are "there". While they are in Kenya, I know that I will miss them, I know that I will worry about them, but I also know that I (as well as my own children) will be thirsty for the stories they will bring back with them.

I was stationed with the 1st Armored Division in Germany and was called up for Gulf War I. The glimpse into another society, even briefly, has touched my life forever. I agree with you Cindy, I know my family was worried mightily while I was there - but I truly would not trade that experience for anything.

I think that the effect Africa had on my fathert is something I will never fully be able to appreciate. When he speaks of it his eyes both lgiht up with wonderment and sadness concurrently. He speaks of taking me there sometimes, and I wonder if I have the strength to do it. When I read this book, I felt like I caught a glimpse of thew African beat in heart, and it's rythym which permeates his soul.

Cindy, my neighbor is from Kenya. It is very interesting to hear the stories of how things are and were there, both good and bad, and to hear his perspective of our way of life. He came here to finish his education, ended up married, and stayed. I feel at a loss that I do not have the experience of another culture in my bag.
