Today I had a breakthrough with an African-American student. In fact, I knew it was gonna happen as soon as I finished the reading. For once, when I helped him the paper, he totally sure of what he had to do, and how to do it. I was assertive, controlled the situation, but worked collaboratively with him. He was like, Bam, right on my level too.
It's funny how a simple thing can insitute racism in our society. And this brings up an insight I gained.
For my job as a study hall leader, a member of the schools faculty, I am prohibited from "stepping over the line" in helping athletes with papers. I am suppose to be vague and general. However, this helps the dominant class more than the minority. The dominant class picks up subversively directive comments, suchs as, "make sure these agree, and think about what your trying to say". Where as with minorities I can't say, "you can not do this, or you need to structure it this way, because it's against the rules. So in my job, it is essentially illegal for me to help a student with a more directive style, and this ends up screwing the kid over! Ha!

This might be breaking the rules as far as your job is concerned, but you are helping students learn, and that is what public education is about. Therefore, you are doing the right thing!

In my opinion, if you are helping a child learn without explicitly giving him the answer you are nurturing and educating. I have a hard time seeing that as illegal. I know there rules but there are also ways around those rules when it comes to educating children and doing what is best for them.

Guidance and nurturing are two of the best gifts you can give as an educator. Understanding and following the rules is important in terms of your job, but working through the barriers to find strategies to help student succeed is what makes our job special. I agree with Amy and Shelly that you did the right thing.
