Delpit focuses mostly on effective instruction for African-American students, but with the increase of Hispanic and Asian populations, I just wonder what types of instruction is best to meet their needs?

In our system we have had a large increase in the Asian and Hispanic population as well. Our system added a "New Comer's Center" to help this growing population. It doesn't directly serve as a strategy for the population, but it doesn't serve as a communication connection for the schools. THis center works closely with the schools making phones and interpreting for teachers in conferences and in cases classroom instruction.

We have a large population of Hispanics in Gastonia. The new students (K-8) attend a program housed at one of the local middle schools to help with the transition. The program length depends on the students readiness to move into a regular classroom. This can take up to 9 weeks. There are 3-4 teachers that teach a certain range of grade levels, so that the Kinders are not with the 8th graders. The teachers help other teachers in the county with translating, assisting with strategies to help the Hispanic students in the classroom, etc. I found that this program has been very effective. When I was in the classroom I had several students go through the program and they were successful in my class and their other classes

I had one strange learning experience tutoring a Hispanic girl. She was very sweet, and we had a nice time, but I had a vague feeling of uneasiness, that she didn't like me or that I wasn't connecting well with her. I tutored her for more than a semester, but then I stopped when I had major surgery. Months later, I read an article about "cultural differences" in the newspaper. In it, the article mentioned that in certain Hispanic households, the children were taught not to look an elder in the eye, that it was disrespectful!

What a revelation that was! That had been the problem all along, she had never looked me in the eye, but she would look down. She looked at the work. I wish someone had told me about this when I began tutoring, it would have saved me from those nagging feelings of inadequacy!
