What are some creative ideas you may have for handling discipline issues?

We have a new asst. principal this year and she's has been making some of our discipline problems stay after school to help pick up trash, mop, weed the flower beds. With one student in particular, this really worked. :D

Students who are not completing their homework assignments are made to stay afterschool on Friday afternoons until they complete missing assignments. We get their parents approval to keep them after school. It is truly amazing how much work they can complete in one hour on Fridays.

In response to Jennifer's comments:
We tried manual labor with some children, but our central office stated that we could not make children perform these tasks without their permission. I liked the idea, but it backfired on us! I used it many times with children who failed to dress out for phy.ed.

We have students stay after school and come on Saturdays. Not real creative.

I think their needs to be more creative ways in which to discipline students. As an AP I feel my hands are tied when a student comes to the office. I have very few choices- time out, ISS, OSS, call parents, silent lunch, not creative at all, but what else do I do?
