I'm curious. Do you think extremes in education and social conditions are more the result of middle/upper class wealth and power or the perceptions of power and victim-thinking? On page 17 Ahmed talked about a lack of clout, on page 57 there is reference to "victim-thinking," and page 61 mentions the political power of Dearborn parents with the Board of Education.

I think some of the problem is that these children think nobody cares what happens to us so why should they care. I belive that some positive thinking about what they could do if they really tried would do wonders for some of these children. Yes they have been given a very tough row to hoe, but just imagine what they could do if they say I am going to beat the odds that are against me and prove that no matter what I will do what I set my mind to. This is not only with the children of these inner city schools, but with all children.

Darla, I totally agree with Amber. The power of "victim-thinking" can stop anyone from reaching their inner potential. Children do not normally give up unless they have heard or seen the same attitudes expressed by adults. Parents play a hugh role in how their children preceive a negative situation. Positive thinking and speaking can go a long way. Physical environmental conditions should not overpower ones inner self-worth. As a parent, I teach my children that bad things happen to good people. The key is not to let the circumstance overtake one. We all can endure any situation if we have positive beliefs, tolerance, and patience. Distress at the onset of a bad situation is an expected normal response. The initial distress will subside once things are put into perspective. I always say, "It could be worse." This always helps me to prioritize and put things into proper perspective. Sometimes, I look at myself and I want to cry because I know I could be better. I do my best; sometimes my best is not enough.

I totally agree with Amber and Fay. It goes back to parental influence. If students see their parents believing that only bad things happen to them, then they will believe that too. Students need to see that good and bad things happen to everyone.

Yes, I agree with all of you. You are responsible for your own actions and only you can change what will happen or become of you! However, I could not imagine what my life would have been like had I not had my parents pushing me and making me be the best that I could be. I would have needed ALOT of will power, motivation, and guidance from someone. I think because I did have it so good growing up, I can't always empathsize with others who have had to struggle and see their parents who have made nothing of themselves. I really don't think some people know any better. They are victims of their environment! I thank God everyday that I grew up with the parents and environment that I had. I need to slow down and realize that it's not always as easy as it sounds to grow up and be successful. I wish it were. I feel so bad for these children!
