At the risk of giving away my age.... I was alive and well in the early 80's and a brand spanking new teacher by the mid 80's. Although I did not stay glued to the evening news, I was not out of touch with what was happening in the world. and as an education major, why was I never aware of the Chicago's schools situation. Why wasn't Diane Sawyer and Sam Donaldson and yes, Geraldo Rivera covering this for all the world to see? We have missionary groups and do-gooders always ready to help out the less fortunate---this was happening in our own backyard---why didn't somebody get up in arms? And what is the state of matters in these schools now?

This seems to be the $64,000 question. Where are the people that can make a difference? If the author can go in and come away with all this information and make it public, why has no one else done the same? Do they turn their heads and look the other way? It would be nice to know the conditions now.

This is what I can't seem to understand in each of these school situations. Where were all the whistle blowers? Where was the union? Where was the NAACP? You are correct in saying that if an author could get in and find out that much information, anyone who was concerned could do the same. And this school system was not even trying to hide anything. I am outraged at all the money we waste on newer, bigger, better, and improved that we couldn't find some solution to these poor children's problems. I would love to know if anything was done after this book became published and what kinds of changes were made. It seems like the President would even see this as a disgrace.

this hit my thoughts exactly! In highschool I went on four mission trips, two out of the country and two in the country. We went to help where needed doing house builing, landscaping, working in schools, helping the homeless etc. The places where I saw this type of atmosphere were in Portugal and that is the picture that came to mind, however not quite as bad as having raw sewage and ceilings falling in on the desk. If the media would have been active we would have known of the need to help these states so close to home!
