I think I understand that the Takers are most people in the world with cultures similar to ours, and the Leavers are those out there who live in harmony with the earth. However, the book wasn't very specific about WHO the Leavers are. I mean, where can they be found? The jungles of Africa? Ishmael tells his student that Leavers are not people who are discontent, rebellious, living empty lives, on drugs, searching for life's meaning, etc. There are no people in the world who do not struggle with these things, no matter how much they give back to the earth! Any culture or group on the planet experiences emptiness, fighting, and discontent. If there is a place out there without these things, I want to live there!!

I would have to say that the leavers are the people who still live off of nature. Maybe not to the extent that they were discussing, but at least maybe the naturalist type people. I'm not 100%, but I think he was still maybe referring to some of the Native Americans or other natives of other countries. I guess we will hsve to wait until tomorrow night.

I believe the Leavers are those who live with or with the understanding that man has not control over nature... but must work with the world... which is what most cultures do not do...

It is my opinion that the leavers are the people/living things that have a deep need for the earth and all that is in it. They have a mutual respect for nature and appreciate what it gives them. They strive to leave things as they are, undisturbed. With the takers, the opposite is true.

Rhonda,
I like how you described the leavers and the takers. That made perfect since to me. Thank you.
