I don't know how people can think that man is basically good after viewing such pictures as the lynchings, stacks of bodies in concentration camps during World War II, rioting in California and Florida, and the list goes on and on. We look at those things and think,"How could they do that?" This stuff has happened all over the world for centuries. Can man be basically good when he is doing that to his fellow human beings? I have to conclude, "No"!

When we cover racism in our classes, my students say the same thing... and I tell them that the human race is the only animal that will kill each other just to kill... not for food or to protect themselves, but for power. No other animal kills to conquer and take over others on such a large scale.
