Okay, this is how naive I am. A couple of months before December, there was a KKK March in Morganton. I had absolutely no idea that the government (etc.) allowed that to happen. My family is in the police department and I asked them why they were allowing this to happen. They explained that they couldn't do a thing, because if they said no then they would have stepped on their freedom of speech rights. The people marching were not even from Morganton. This group was coming from Georgia and they just chose Morganton.

I don't understand how this is still going on, even in a town as small as Morganton.

I had to explain to my students what was going on. Some of them did not even know what KKK stood for.

Heather, the KKK is still active in my hometown and a bunch of small towns in the state. I remember watching 20/20 or something like that and it was stated that with the introduction of the internet and easy access to any type of information, the membership into hate groups has exploded. Makes you wonder if there has been any progress towards equality on any level.

The KKK is also holding a march on Saturday at 2:00 in Hudson, which is a small town close to Lenoir. The NCAACP is holding a rally at 9:30 in Lenoir. Just goes to show how naive we are. I didn't realize that these things could still go on.
