My students are finishing up a chapter in Social Studies about American Heritage and why our country is what it is today. I thought that was strange since we've been looking at that in class. We all need to be aware of our American Heritage because it does affect our lives and the lives of the students we teach.
One of their activities asked them to write about their hero and why that person was their hero. Almost all of them said someone in their family was their hero (the most frequent answer was their mom). That was very interesting to me because I expected them to name famous people such as singers, actors, or wrestlers. I think it is important for us to help our students understand that it's okay to have a hero and to look up to that person.

I honestly can't imagine growing up without a hero. I have found great inspiration in my life from my heroes. My heroes are people who possess admirable qualities that almost seem superhuman, but nonetheless achievable. I think children need to understand what admirable qualities are. This day and age is so different from the one I grew up in. I worry about the values that society is instilling in our youth of today and future leaders of tomorrow.

Several years ago, I did a lesson on heros with my third grade class. My principal came to observe the lesson and everything was flawless. I worked hard stressing the importance of role models in our lives. The kids were on their best behavior, the overhead projector actually worked, and believe it or not there were no interruptions. At the end of the lesson my children had the task of writing about their hero. Feeling very confident about the important lesson I had just taught, I asked if there were any questions about the assignment. One little hand went into the air and asked, "How do you spell Scooby-Doo?"

What a cute story Nancy..... I think that hero's are very important in a person's life with admireable qualitites. If these chidlren who often times rebel, and seem lost in the world had a "real" person they could look up to who would lead them down the right path instead of just the media and in some cases no one at all, they may would change their lives around. I look at my life and it is the "hero's in my life that I don't want to let down by the decisions I make.
