I see the message of givers and takers introduced in Ishmael, so clearly played out in Poisonwood Bible----especially in the end chapters when Anitole and Leah (I think I've got the right twin), his wife, choose to go back to Africa and help the people, rather than stay in America where life would be "easier."
While reading Tuck Everlasting with my students these past few weeks, I have been reminded of a reoccuring thought that I had while reading Ishmael and Poisonwood.---- Yes, this life is so unfair. There are pepole who will always be takers and who will never have a generous enough heart to want to help out others--- but we don't live forever--Now, don't misunderstand, I don't mean that we shouldn't try to make this world a better place---we try everyday as teachers---but, as a Christian, I know that this world is not my home, and it will never be a place of perfect peace and harmony. Tuck Everlasting focuses on the opportunity to "live forever on this earth"--- but a major point of the story is that that is not necessarily the best option---We have our time here---our opportunity to make choices--try to create change---do good--but life on this earth is not permanent--and it is an imperfect world.

Penny, you definitely make some good points. When I think about Poisonwood, Nathan probably perceived himself as being a giver. But in reality, he only gave people a hard time. I think before we try to be givers, we have to make sure we know what people really need, and we need to make sure we go in to it with a humble attitude.
