I think Cedric's professor Larry Wakeford gave him some good advice that all of us can use at one time or another in our lives, regardless of our race. He told Cedric that he needed to distance himself from all that he had been through. He told him to put his anger in a place where he could get it when he needed to, but not to let it consume him and hinder him from understanding the ideas and experiences of others. Cedric eventually realized that he needed to know who he was and to accept himself for who he was. That is true for all of us. We all want to be accepted. Is this what W.E.B. DuBois was talking about when referring to "a sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others, of measuring one's soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity"

Evaluating ourselves through the eyes of others can grow wearisome. The saddest part is...we can never please ALL; we can only please SOME; so my philosophy is to think about who I think it's important for me to be and evaluate that by the standards that I and my family have chosen to live by.......all the rest (although you always want people to like you) are the least of your worries.
