For a break from some of the heavy issues we have been discussing....
What other "personified" character would better suit the novel Ishmael than a talking gorilla? I just keep envisioning King Kong!
I was thinking maybe that talking AFLAC duck or Charlie Brown's beagle Snoopy.... he always has a good philosophy toward life!

My dog knows more than anybody how I really am when no one else is around. He's heard a lot of opinions, good and bad... and always seems to agree. Of course, he probably would no longer be my best friend if he could actually talk! How about a fly....they could be almost anywhere unnoticed. It would be the closest thing to being invisible that I could think of!

Rosanna, I would hazard a guess that there are many dogs or other pets that have taken money out of therapists’ hands. I know mine has!!

I found the entire book leaving me with more questions than what I started with.

I am loving this book thus far. I have always questioned how one owns land. It seems that it is for all to use, but instead humans having completely taken over. We clearly dont care about the environment for we put out fires that are designed to clean the brush. We damn rivers to put toys on. The world is truly human playground.

Amy, I think it is great that you have more questions now. I always feel that when I am questioning I am growing. My husband asked me last night when I thought I would be through with my education. I asked him back when he thought I would be through and he stated - never. I have several degrees that I do not use professionally, but I don’t think they were wasted. So, don’t worry about the questions, relish them!

Is Ishmael truly talking or is the student halucinating?
page 196 - "Intrigued, the visitors turned to see what response this would evoke from Ishmael. When it came, of course, only I could hear."
Did the visitors not hear based on proximity or because he wasn't really talking?

Perhaps the fact that the narrator can hear what the gorilla has to say is akin to what Jesus Christ often repeated when he was making a rather important teaching. Christ often said, and I paraphrase, "Let him who has ears to hear attend to what I say." The meaning of this I was always told was that "those who have the ability to hear the message should listen." This was especially true with the parables of Christ which still cause much disagreement among Christians. Perhaps the others can't hear the message of the gorilla because they are not in tune with the message. Sometimes we do not hear because we are not truly listening.

If I could change Ishamel in some way...
I would make him into the Velveteen Rabbit with a voicebox that says:
I am your friend. You are my friend. We are so happy together.
