I was just watching the news and heard about the National Day of Silence. Here is the website if you are interested in more information.

I first heard (well.. maybe heard isn't the right word..) about the National Day of Silence in high school. I thought it really sent a strong message of acceptance and solidarity- not only among the students at my school, but also including quite a few teachers who participated in the day of silence. Instead of teaching a normal lesson that day, the teachers who participated wrote instructions on the board of what we should work on during that class period. A few of the teachers even deviated from what we were currently working on and assigned readings about gay and lesbian issues. It was actually through one of those lessons that I first heard about Matthew Shepard.
