I'm confused with the character, Alai. I thought he was Ender's friend. However on page 170 Alai stated ," Don't you know, we're enemies now." I became lost in this argument. I don't understand why Alai makes this
decision. Was he provoked by someone?

I think it just means that they are on opposite teams and would be competing against each other. They would no longer be able to share ideas. The term enemies just shows how they took the games to the extreme.
