This morning on the news they were talking about how one of the high schools in Mecklenburg county (I don't remember which school) was changing its mascot. For years they have been the Indians. They said the students were voting on a new mascot.
This vote may help excite some who may not want to change mascots.
It is always interesting to see topics we have talked about on the news.

Kate, did it say why they were changing mascots? I am wondering if has anything to do with the diversity issue and if being the indians has posed a problem for them.

Kate,
I, too, am always interested when I see something in the news that we've discussed in class. I think it is GREAT to know they are changing their mascot. Change begins with one small step and maybe other High Schools will follow.

I object to the changing of the school mascot. I have been an 'indian' all my school career and now my sons are 'indians'. This is not a put-down for the Native Americans the way I see it. I see 'indians' as strong, resourceful, warriors willing to fight for what is theirs. I am proud to be an 'indian' and have one on my vehicle to show my pride and support. If my opinion counts for anything in the school system, we will always be the St. Stephens Indians!!!

They did mention that they were changing mascots because of the concerns of Native Americans in the community. They also showed a short clip of what looked like a pep rally where they revealed the new mascot (hawks). There was a lot of enthusiasm, so hopefully it will be a positive change for the school.
