Being a slight nerd, I have been reading the rest of Lies my teacher told me by James Loewen. We have talked about the Helen Keller story in both classes (for those of you also in ci 3850). I would like to present a few quotes from the introduction of this book that will hopefully encourage everyone to teach the truth.
"It would be better not to know so many things than to know so many things that are not so." -Felix Okoye
"American history is longer, larger, more various, more beautiful, and more terrible than anything anyone has ever said about it." -James Baldwin ( I really like that one!)
"Textbooks stifle meaning by suppressing causation. Students exit history textbooks without having developed the ability to think coherently about social life." - James Loewen, p. 15
I think the last quote particularly ties in to the topics of this course, that there are obvious social classes, regardless of their construction, and that teaching true history can help explain and move beyond the boundaries. I don't know what kind of responses I'm expecting, but this just needed to be posted.
