On Monday November 2, I attended an Ashe County School Board Meeting. The majority of the meeting was about getting approvals for coaches and new teacher assistants, but there was one presentation that really stood out. It was done by a group of Middle School teachers working on a project called 21st Century Learning. The program was being used to help prevent students from dropping out. The grant the teachers received to fund this program was paid for a laptop for each student to use while at school, and dsl for each student to have in their home. The parents and students had to sign a contract stating that the internet will automatically be cut off at 10p.m. every night and certain websites are prohibited. The students are also taken on a retreat to gain team building skills. The teachers applied for extra funding so the program could follow the students into the 8th grade and on into High School. I think it is great that the teachers are trying to find anyone possible to prevent students from dropping out! The teachers seemed to really care about their students and are willing to do anything for them.
